<p><strong>Why are you here?</strong> <strong>What do you want?</strong> <strong>How much does it matter?</strong></p>
<p>Find the questions daunting? We all have at one time or another.</p>
<p>I have no wisdom to add except that it is in the <em>process of asking</em> the questions and seeking the answers in the company of likeminded fellow travellers &#8211; that we get there, It takes experience, gleaning the support and the strength we need to embrace the changes it will take for us to find our &#8220;true north&#8221;.</p>
<p>So skip the &#8220;resolutions&#8221;. They imply &#8220;going it alone&#8221;. The dead of winter is the worst time to decide to start a diet, take up running or head to the gym in the dark if you weren&#8217;t inclined to get there in the light.</p>
<p>Begin by &#8220;spring cleaning&#8221; your mind, embrace silence, let go the belief that you can&#8217;t change and <em><strong>choose only to change your thinking</strong></em>. Find mentors, allies, friends and peers. You don&#8217;t have to go far.</p>
<p>Take a class, read a great book, join a group. <em><strong>Just start a conversation</strong></em>.</p>

		<title>Peace to Prosperity &#8211; the Space Between</title>

		<description><![CDATA[<p><p>I’m passionate about the privilege of living in a place so beautiful that C.S. Lewis modeled Narnia on it. Carlingford Lough &#38; the Mournes is where he spent childhood summers with his grandmother.</p>
<p>I’m passionate about working to teach entrepreneurship, creating jobs and bringing investment. The granddaughter of a reluctant emigrant, I returned a century after he left to find work. The children of this island are leaving again. <em>We are exporting 1000 a week</em>. 54,000 left in a 12-month period between 2010 &#38; 11.<span id="more-974"></span></p>
<p>Sadder still is we are now exporting our first generation reared in peace. We need to export their intellectual property, not our children.</p>
<p>I am passionate that to do this, to create jobs and have our children take their place on the world stage, they must find their voices.</p>
<p>Whatever does that mean?</p>
<p>Tolstoy suggested that everyone wants to change the world, but nobody wants to change themselves.</p>
<p>If we are going to compete in a global economy, we are going to have to sell our location, our gifts, our talents and ourselves.  We just aren’t very good at that.</p>
<p>Reared with generations of conflict our parents and we were taught to “not get above our station”, not “raise our heads above the parapet” and for some of us, to be unfailingly polite. Fitting in, sometimes invisibly, mattered, so from a young age we were silenced.</p>
<p>How? Well, in my Irish American family, with shame and humour. Oh, the &#8220;reared in conflict&#8221; <em>way of being</em> crossed the pond.</p>
<p>Delighted to be meeting my dad and brother for dinner, I confidently strode in with a new, 1975 permanent &#8211; the rage of the day. Was I greeted with: “you look nice”? No. “Hi, love, how are you”? No. A hug? No.</p>
<p>My father, his loving blue eyes, glaring over the rim of his glasses said:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">“My, don’t you look like the ass end of a poodle”.</p>
<p>Every time I saw him for the next six months, I blew that perm out straight. Never wore a perm curly again!</p>
<p>Fifteen years later, while studying counseling, I read that the Irish discipline their children by chastising with shame and humour. Definitely. I skipped to the Italians, my mother&#8217;s tribe, they didn’t. Then I read about my husband’s ethnic background. They didn’t chastise at all – they lavished praise and encouragement.</p>
<p>Oops! An &#8220;aha&#8221; moment: for the better part of two decades, when he’d done something that annoyed me, I made a joke.  He thought I was amused. He continued the behavior. He never got the “cease and desist” message.</p>
<p>I took the lesson on board in my personal relationships, framed my communications with clients and coworkers more carefully and never gave it a conscious thought again.</p>
<p>Until I moved to Ireland.</p>
<p>I walked into a village butcher shop, asked for a brisket and went on to describe it.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">&#8220;What would you be wantin that for?&#8221;<br />
<em>“My children are coming and it’s their favourite meal.”</em><br />
“Well, your children will just have to learn to eat Irish.”<br />
<em>(momentary stunned silence)<br />
</em><em>“Well, I will learn to ‘eat Irish’, my guests will learn to ‘eat Irish’, but my children will have what they have always had, I’ll be in tomorrow at 2 to pick it up.”</em></p>
<p>On leaving I had two reactions. Initially, simply dumbfounded; then shocked by my response. In spite of believing that I no longer defaulted to adaptive responses learned in childhood, I’d been close to changing my order. Had it been for myself or for a guest, I likely would have. But no, only because it was <strong><em>for my children!</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em> </em></strong>They have been the motivation for the most significant life changes I have made.</p>
<p>In my office in Newry, I observed someone a bit younger than I tense up. Stiff shoulders, straight back – but why.  Weeks later I observed it again.  A bit after that I asked what was happening?</p>

“Hear what?”<br />
<em>“The helicopter”</em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>No, these American reared ears don’t hear – or listen for helicopters. It means only a traffic report, an air ambulance, a visiting dignitary ferried from an airport.</p>
<p>Not so for my border colleagues and neighbours. The sound of a helicopter catapults them back in time. They know in their bones this sound means danger.</p>
<p>My American childhood, unencumbered by conflict, allows me to meet and greet a police officer – feeling secure and safe. Neighbours here my age do not. They are reactive, they carry the fear and/or the rage of past encounters.</p>
<p>These adaptive responses served them well during the troubles. It is problematic now; as they do not serve our children well.</p>
<p>Do I want them to “get over it”? <strong><em>Absolutely not!</em></strong></p>
<p>The pain and trauma of generations of conflict needs to be honoured. It needs to be talked about. Not having an unencumbered childhood is a loss. We must individually and collectively grieve it.</p>
<p><strong><em>For our children</em></strong>, though we can change our behaviours. Why?</p>
<p>Because, in our automatic, adaptive responses we transmit to our children our fear and our anger.</p>
<p>Because in our effort to care for them we rear them as we were reared.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>“Don’t put your head above the parapet” (</em><em><strong>Don’t take chances</strong>)<br />
</em><em>“Don’t be getting above your station” (</em><em><strong>Quiet that ambition</strong>)<br />
</em><em>&#8220;You won’t be bringing shame on this house” (<strong>Don’t tell the truth</strong>)</em></p>

<p>Back to the butcher. I’d related the story in a group I was running – as an example of assertion vs. cheekiness. I ran into a woman 6 months after it ended.</p>

</em><em>“You, do?”<br />
</em>“I remembered that you said speaking up, asking for something you don&#8217;t see or sending something back presented an opportunity for a shopkeeper to serve. So I asked: Do you have any rhubarb?<em><br />
</em><em>“No, and I don’t know why. John up the road has a field of it. Leave it with me and come back tomorrow.”<br />
</em>A few hours later there was a knock on her door. The lad from the butcher’s, holding a bunch of rhubarb.<br />
<em>“He said to give you this.”</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">We <em><strong>can</strong></em> throw off the adaptive behaviours, and model new and assertive ones better suited to the 21st century.</p>
<p>One day, one transaction, <strong><em>one kind and civil conversation </em></strong>at a time. <em><strong>For the children.</strong></em></p>
<p>I know it will take time, but I come from a tradition that says restoring the earth and repairing the world is our obligation – <em>“ours is not to complete the task, but neither may we desist from the labour”. (Ethics of the Fathers)</em></p>
<p>I am proud to live among the people who made the peace. I am reminded too of an Irish  expression I didn&#8217;t understand when I arrived in a hurry to do everything. I appreciate it better now:</p>

Launched in October, <a href="http://blip.tv/reliveproductions/empowering-change-launch-artist-fridays-with-pedar-jackson-6391203">Peadar Jackson</a> generously shared his work. Ten pieces are on display through November. It has transformed the space. Cathy Brady and her film crew were resident for two weeks. A Newry native, she returned from England to set her latest film in the Mournes and Donegal. We are hoping to host a screening soon! 		<description><![CDATA[<p><p>Brian Morgan raised the question in a Border Counties Forum on Linkedin: Can Local Authorities really lead the development of a Cross Border Development Zone?  http://goo.gl/Fu2d0</p>
<p>The success of BorderBizCamp proved: good things happen when 15 business folk conspire and drive the engine of government agencies.</p>
<p>This can happen on a as wide and broad a scale as the border counties themselves. Bradley &#38; Best’s study (see above link) is what we have long known. The very nature of the region itself, geographically and politically made us an entrepreneurial sort. “Bandit country” has the potential to lead the way for economic recovery on the island of Ireland.</p>
<p>This consideration of a 32 county economy and a market of 6 million vs. 4+2, is without a political agenda. Collectively we must conspire to grow and export our IP, our goods and services and not our children.</p>
<p>Where to begin? Well versed in your own industries, you know better than I. A blow- in with a private technology and entrepreneurial incubator, and as a passing experience of running businesses in medicine and Real Estate offer the following:</p>
<p>No mother with a child complaining of a sports injury is prepared to wait 8-16 weeks for an MRI. I was impatient with an 8 week wait for an echocardiogram. Skilled technologists – not doctors are largely responsible for the delivery of these services. In US emergency rooms (A&#38;E) in rural areas and during the late night shifts in urban settings, technicians perform the scans and doctors in Asia read them during the middle of their work day. A shortage of radiologists or junior doctors does not impede the delivery of health care. In fact, it drives down the costs. These machines, staffed and run in underserved areas would create jobs in sustainable businesses.</p>
<p>Currently, cardiac surgery necessary in NI but not available, is paid for by the NHS to Dublin hospitals. Residential treatment for eating disorders not available on the island, is paid for by both health services for treatment in England and America. Insurance companies pay both services. It can be done and it need not be elitist. If private industry can provide this service more efficiently and cost effectively, then let’s explore health care as an economic engine for the border. It can simply subcontract to the health services.</p>
<p>Similarly, investment in ambulance services pays off. Across rural America, many local hospitals serve as triage centres for regional trauma centres. State of the art motor and helicopter ambulances are staffed by physicians, physicians assistants and/or skilled medics.</p>
<p>This system began to evolve following the return of highly qualified medics from the Vietnam War theatre. The UK has announced such a pull back from Afghanistan and of late Iraq. Highly qualified medics and trauma nurses are already trained and available. While I know the proposed introduction of helicopters to the border is dicey – these would be well received. It could become a jobs program for returning veterans. They could lead the training of local professionals.</p>
<p>New York City investors in the 40s &#38; 50s, impatient with banks and other available finance mechanisms created a new instrument , the REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust). Oversimplified it is a mutual fund run by real estate professionals. If great minds could create that lasting &#38; secure financial instrument, we can adopt the method, or create a new one. Individual investors here and in the Diaspora could buy shares creating substantial funds. Public-private partnerships can then build relief roads and technology parks.</p>
<p>Lastly, currently bringing investment to the Newry/Dundalk region has taught me that the single greatest opportunity will come at the hands of an attitude change. “What would you be movin to this feckin country for?” – It needs to be replaced by:</p>
<p>I live in a beautiful region – the prototype for C.S. Lewis’ Narnia. I live and work 15 minutes from home, all within 1.25 hrs drive of two capital cities with world class museums, theatre and restaurants. My business is within a 2 ½ hour drive of 75% of the population of the island.</p>
<p>The men and women who built Silicon Valley, the research and technology centres in Colorado and the Golden triangle in the Carolinas – they don’t live and work in New York City or LA. They live and work where the quality of life is like our own. Offices are on campuses not in skyscrapers, there is access to nature, the mountains and the sea. Good schools and a great place to rear children.</p>
<p>The island of Ireland is uniquely positioned to be the conduit through which the research, development and customer service needs of North and South America – meets Europe and Asia. One thousand a week don’t have to emigrate.</p>
<p>A decade from now we can be bringing them home with their new skills and new found love of life in “these feckin countries”. But only if we all conspire to tell the world.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Brian Morgan raised the question in a Border Counties Forum on Linkedin: Can Local Authorities really lead the development of a Cross Border Development Zone?  http://goo.gl/Fu2d0</p>
<p>The success of BorderBizCamp proved: good things happen when 15 business folk conspire and drive the engine of government agencies.</p>
<p>This can happen on a as wide and broad a scale as the border counties themselves. Bradley &amp; Best’s study (see above link) is what we have long known. The very nature of the region itself, geographically and politically made us an entrepreneurial sort. “Bandit country” has the potential to lead the way for economic recovery on the island of Ireland.</p>
<p>This consideration of a 32 county economy and a market of 6 million vs. 4+2, is without a political agenda. Collectively we must conspire to grow and export our IP, our goods and services and not our children.</p>
<p>Where to begin? Well versed in your own industries, you know better than I. A blow- in with a private technology and entrepreneurial incubator, and as a passing experience of running businesses in medicine and Real Estate offer the following:</p>

<p>People often ask me what <em><strong>BizCamp</strong></em> is. An unconference. What&#8217;s that? Quite simply: it&#8217;s a <em>labour of love</em>.</p>
<p>Congratulations to the <strong><em><a title="Border Counties Forum" href="http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Border-Counties-Forum-4182759?gid=4182759&#38;goback=%2Emyg" target="_blank">BorderBizCamp team</a></em></strong>; the day was brilliant, every detail was attended to and operations ran like a well oiled machine. The speakers were outstanding, the range and quality was excellent.</p>
<p>It was as it should be everywhere. A small group of motivated and determined business people took what works best about their relationships with each other,  the local enterprise agency and the <em><strong><a title="Monaghan Enterprise Board" href="http://mceb.ie/" target="_blank">M:TEK</a> </strong></em> location  and modeled it for the world. You genuinely brought the best out in everyone.</p>
<p>Thank you also to the <em><a title="Monaghan Enterprise Board" href="http://mceb.ie/" target="_blank">Monaghan Enterprise Agency</a></em> staff for volunteering on the day; <em>business is business</em> and I have often heard it said that agencies “don’t get it”.</p>
<p>Not this <strong>MEA</strong><strong> team;</strong> look at <strong><em>enterprise</em></strong> defined and it could be seen in the energy and enthusiasm of every volunteer.</p>
<p>[ √]  A project undertaken, especially one that is important or difficult or that requires boldness or energy;</p>
<p>[ √]  The participation in such projects;</p>
<p>[ √]  A company organised for commercial purposes</p>
<p>[ √]  Boldness or readiness in undertaking; adventurous spirit; ingenuity.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s the way in which we share the full measure of our experience.</p>
<p>The onus is on the listener to <span style="color: #000000;"><strong><em>take what you like and leave the rest</em></strong></span>. Carefully chosen <strong><em>words unconsciously deliver</em></strong> a full message. Just how full, is revealed not just in the first telling, but when compared to the <em><strong>retelling</strong></em>.</p>
<p>We, in the West, let go <em><strong>the gift of storytelling</strong></em> in the last half of the twentieth century; in large part because we devoted ourselves to science. Science would reveal explanations for everything “unexplainable”. <em>We no longer needed to <strong>spin yarns for children</strong> about the noise of thunder or from where the rain came.</em></p>
<p>The<em><strong> filmmakers, songwriters and poets</strong></em> never lost sight of the value of a good story. Interestingly, and most notably in the case of film, they just keep retelling the old ones.  If I said that <em><strong>StarWars</strong></em> was the Jesus story redux, a few might agree, some would deem me blasphemous, others just dismiss. If I argued that the <em><strong>Matrix</strong></em> was like the Abraham story, perhaps the same result. It doesn&#8217;t really matter, the telling of a story is enough. <em><strong>J.K. Rowling got a generation reading again</strong></em>!  Harry Potter’s adventures don&#8217;t require interpretation, but -</p>
<p>the Monomyth is a term academics use to describe one story common to the mythology of all cultures– the Hero&#8217;s Journey. The visual says it all:</p>

<p>We live in challenging times. We can choose to despair, or to allow them to be <em><strong>transformative</strong></em>. You can <em><strong>choose the journey</strong></em>. It begins with you.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[<p><p>A<em><strong> Belfast filmmaker</strong></em> recently described the experience of growing up next door to a police station. Awakened frequently, the family regularly evacuated and returned to blown out windows. Did he realise that 25 years later that he referred to the building next door as “the playstation”?</p>
<p>My work centres on <em><strong>helping folks get “unstuck”</strong></em>. I support their journey through career change and business start-up.</p>
<p>The method is rooted in their stories. They learn they are not “Sean the accountant” or “Susan the mother of 4”; I begin to know them while they begin to understand themselves. They describe where they came from, I <em><strong>reflect their story back</strong></em>. They start moving in a new direction. Not one I choose for them, but one illuminated by the light of their own story telling process.</p>
<p>Simply put it is the way in which we share the <em><strong>full measure of our experiences</strong></em>.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A<em><strong> Belfast filmmaker</strong></em> recently described the experience of growing up next door to a police station. Awakened frequently, the family regularly evacuated and returned to blown out windows. Did he realise that 25 years later that he referred to the building next door as “the playstation”?</p>
<p>My work centres on <em><strong>helping folks get “unstuck”</strong></em>. I support their journey through career change and business start-up.</p>
